Residents displaced on New Year’s Eve after fire at Getzville apartment complex

Heavy fire on two stories at the Hopkins Court Apartments in Getzville has displaced residents from the complex on New Yearโ€™s Eve.

Residents of the apartment building at 2250 North French Road were taken Sunday to a warming shelter, according to the Getzville Fire Company.

Some of them were evaluated for various minor injuries, including two taken to local hospitals. One resident had to be rescued from the balcony inside the apartment where the fire started.

Damages were estimated at around $650,000, the Getzville Fire Company said.

The Amherst Police Department was on the scene of the residential fire investigating and asked that the public avoid the area Sunday evening.

At 5:25 p.m. Sunday, the Amherst Central Fire Alarm Office said it received multiple calls from residents reporting a fire at the complex on a second floor exterior balcony with the fire extending into the apartment.ย 

Getzville Fire members arrived on scene and confirmed heavy fire on the second floor of the apartment building with fire extending into the attic of the building, the company said.

Amherst Emergency Services, with the help of Erie County Emergency Services and Twin City Ambulance EMS personnel, evaluated numerous residents, some with minor injuries and others for precaution, the Amherst Central Fire Alarm Office said.ย 

University at Buffalo Police assisted on scene and with providing transportation by university buses that shuttled residents toย the Amherst Senior Center at 370 John James Audubon. NFTA buses were also on scene to assist.ย 

Those having trouble locating a loved one should call 716-858-6419. The American Red Cross assisted with setting up the warming shelter and assisting any displaced residents in need.
