The state Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigation is investigating the 2023 death of an inmate who appeared to suffer a seizure at the Erie County Holding Center.
Sheriff’s Office officers provided assistance to the prisoner on Aug. 8 after the detainee appeared to have a seizure, the AG’s Office said. The prisoner became physically combative and officers held the inmate in a prone position as they put on handcuffs.
When the person became unresponsive, officers attempted to treat him before he was taken to a local hospital, the AG’s Office said. He was pronounced dead a week later, on Aug. 15.
A spokeswoman for the Attorney General’s Office declined to identify the inmate.
The Erie County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement that it is jointly investigating the death with the AG’s Office.
“Due to the ongoing nature of this inquiry, it would be inappropriate to comment further at this time,” the Sheriff’s Office said.
Under state law, the Office of Special Investigations assesses every incident where a police officer or corrections officer may have caused the death of a person by an act or omission.
If OSI’s assessment indicates an officer may have caused the death, OSI proceeds to conduct a full investigation of the incident.
